Ceramic Forming Methods

The earliest history of ceramic manufacturing in China can be traced back to more than 3,000 years ago. Although there are many differences between pottery and ceramic or porcelain, the two are organically linked. From the earliest manual kneading method and mud strip plate construction method, it has developed to the mud sheet sealing method, wheel forming method, impression method and grouting method.

 

1. Manual kneading method

It is the most primitive and simple way to create clay with your hands at will and make some smaller objects.

 

2. Mud strip dish construction Method

Roll the soil into mud strips, build the mud strips from the bottom of the instrument to the wall until the mouth of the instrument, and then use mud glue to complete the instrument, and finally smooth the mud cracks left by the wall plate building. This method appeared in the middle Neolithic Age.

 

3. Mud sheet enclosing method

The raw mud block is processed into mud sheet first, and then the mud sheet is enclosed and combined into the required shape.

 

4. Wheel forming Method

The mud is placed on the wheel and formed by the centrifugal force generated by the wheel rotation. It is mainly used for the production of round body type, the wheel system has slow wheel, fast wheel.

 

5. Impression Method

The process of forming clay by embedding it in a special mold. It is mainly used for making ceramic figurines, animal and ware parts, ornamentation and so on.

 

6. Grouting method

A method in which mud is poured into a plaster mold and the suspended slurry is adsorbed on the inner wall of the mold by capillary action of the plaster model.
